Cruise ship illness
http://www.dmaonline.org/fppublic/connect35.html
What's been happening?
In the first 11 months of 2002, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) received reports of 21 FBI outbreaks on a total of 17 cruise ships. Most occurred from July through December, and many received high-profile news coverage, such as several Carnival cruises, Holland America cruises, and the Disney Magic cruise. In some cases, ships were taken out of service, disinfected, and then boarded for new cruises, where both crew and passengers again became ill. Some passengers booked for cruises have cancelled their plans.

Los Angeles attorney, Geoffrey P. Norton, has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of the Ryndam's sick passengers and says the passengers weren't told about the virus before they arrived for the cruise. Norton says "One of our passengers contracted the virus and died a week later without ever recovering." That passenger was 56 year old Martin Massey, who had several serious health problems including severe arthritis. His friends, who were on the voyage with him, say if he had known about the virus, he would have stayed home. Massey's friend Barbara Deely told us, " This was a celebration that turned into a nightmare."

The CDC said 301 of 1,557 passengers and 45 of the 687 member crew came down with gastrointestinal illness.
X-Rays at the airport
http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q1910.html
One consequence of the events of September 11, 2001, is that airport security measures are now being implemented that involve "full body x-ray scans." The claims are that they are low energy and relatively harmless. What are the dangers of exposure to these scans, if any, and are they cumulative? Are frequent flyers at increased risk?

AN X-RAY machine that sees through air passengers' clothes has been deployed by security staff at London's Heathrow airport for the first time.
The device at Terminal 4 produces a "naked" image of passengers by bouncing X-rays off their skin, enabling staff instantly to spot any hidden weapons or explosives.
But the graphic nature of the black and white images it generates - including revealing outlines of men and women - has raised concerns about privacy both among travellers and aviation authorities.

So now, instead of looking at your shoes, Null says, "we are actually going to do a full body scan of an individual."
Airport security screeners have the ability to take the shirt right off your back, "so all anatomical features are shown," says Null

US Anti-War Activists Hit By Secret Airport Ban
It is impossible to know for sure who might be on the list, or why. The ACLU says a list kept by security personnel at Oakland airport ran to 88 pages. More than 300 people have been subject to special questioning at San Francisco airport, and another 24 at Oakland, according to police records. In no case does it appear that a wanted criminal was apprehended.
Humiliating searches

She was singled out, told to strip off her shirt in public and obtrusively patted down at airport security. But actress Patti LuPone is not complaining about the search, she's just asking for better communication.

''I thought, 'What did you say?' but you only have a split second to think. Then I felt her hands going over my breast and on my left breast, she ran her pinky finger under the underwire of my bra. It was extremely violating.''

FBI probes lasers aimed at plane cockpits
WASHINGTON (AP) - Pilots from time to time encounter laser beams that stray into the cockpit on approach to an airport, but a recent rash of such incidents - at least seven since Christmas - has them worried about an organized effort to take down airliners.

AMTRAK ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL IDENTIFICATION AND TICKET PURCHASE REQUIREMENTS
Philadelphia - Amtrak announced today additional identification and ticket purchase requirements for its national system of intercity train service. Effective Monday, October 8th, guests boarding at any station between Washington, D.C. and Boston will be required to have a ticket prior to boarding the train.
This policy effectively ends the practice of conductors selling tickets on board trains between Washington, D.C. and Boston. Additionally, photo identification will be now be necessary to purchase tickets from conductors on board trains, as it is in stations, in other areas of the country outside the Northeast Corridor.
